In June, the FDA approved the first vaccine to prevent infection with the specific subtypes of HPV notably 6,11,16, & 18. Subtypes 16 and 18 are associated with causing more than 70% of cervical cancer cases. Subtypes 6 and 11 are associated with causing more than 90% of all genital warts and most cases of respiratory papillomatosis. The name of this vaccine is Gardisil. As stated in my previous communications, it has been clearly demonstrated that specific types of high-risk HPV infection is required for the development of cervical cancer, subtypes 16 and 18 being responsible for at least 70% of these cervical cancer cases. With the development of HPV-specific vaccination, HPV-associated disease can be prevented, at least those diseases caused by the specific subtypes of HPV represented in that vaccine. This vaccine is considered a quadrivalent (4 HPV subtypes) vaccine. Now, it's not out yet. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has to rule next on who actually gets it. Then, the decisions on federal funding and insurance coverage will come next. Keep posted. Doc
